A day in the life of a Type 1 Diabetic
I have been asked this a number of times so I thought it should be posted to the blog.
I'm a Type 1 and have been for the last 30 years so well past the "honeymoon"stage so I can tell you there is life after diagnosis!
My HbA1C is 5.8% (40mmol/mol) last bloods have reported everything good, nothing even remotely high. Ultrasounds of internals and retinal scans also reveal I am in excellent health even for someone without diabetes. I get a D3 deficiency in winter so I take a supplement then. My insulin usage is less than 0.5 units per Kg of body weight (I'm 83Kg). I work in an intense job loading trucks and when I'm not doing that , body building and rarely get hypos or need to load up with carbs to do it just regular meals is enough. I eat 5 small meals throughout the day, like most body builders, and take a BCAA and Protein Isolate supplement to keep my sugars steady,( these are branched chain amino acids not the bulking stuff so no carbs or fats involved).
I am Vegan so I eat a lot of Legumes, Fruits, Wholegrains and Vegetables of all types including starchy and green leafy as well as heaps of walnuts which is where I get my good fats from. Typically I eat 3000 calories a day to keep my energy levels up so 600 calories per meal with no animal dairy added fats or oils.
